Newcastle International Airport team to conquer Hadrian’s Wall in charity challenge

As part of a bespoke development programme named Make a Difference, the seven staff members pledged to walk over 80 miles across Hadrian’s Wall to reach a target of £30,000 for the NSPCC. This year is the airport’s fifth year of sponsoring the NSPCC, and every year the team has reached a goal of £100,000 for the charity. This year they hope to achieve a running total of half a million pounds for the charity.

The team, which consists of the airport planner, two fire watch managers, an airport duty manager, the energy and sustainability specialist, a management account and media executive, was selected by airport bosses for their potential to make a difference to the business over the course of a year. As well as the charity trek, they will tackle a number of challenges set across different departments. The airport’s chief executive Dave Laws, finance director Simon Fisher, and HR manger Keith Faley joined the team at the airport’s new meeting place, Condeco Bar, and encouraged passengers to get involved.

Dave Laws said: “We are extremely proud of our continued partnership with the NSPCC. The introduction of a team dedicated to fundraising is fantastic, and they have the potential to make a long lasting difference to the business. We look forward to seeing results as they work together with others throughout the airport, including our business partners, to reach the £500,000 milestone which will help the charity raise awareness of child cruelty. Customers will see the team as they travel during the summer – do talk to them about how we are doing and how you can get involved. We encourage all to show their generosity and see how they can make a difference.”

NSPCC corporate fundraising manager for the north east, Danny Mitchell, said: “Newcastle International Airport is a great supporter of the NSPCC and we are extremely grateful for their continued fundraising efforts. Over the years the Airport has raised a fantastic amount to help fund local and national NSPCC services, including ChildLine and the NSPCC Helpline. In the past staff at the Airport have undertaken some unusual and demanding fundraising activities and this latest challenge goes to show their continued commitment to helping children. We wish the team the best of luck with their Hadrian’s Wall walk and hope passengers and members of the public will get behind the team to help them make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children here in the North East and across the UK.”

Fundraising activity will take place at Newcastle Airport throughout the summer in anticipation for the walk in October. A special Twitter account has been set up to document the team’s progress and highlight fun, fundraising events.
