Winter weather conditions in the UK and Europe have affected air travel in the busy Christmas period. Due to severe snowfall at airports elsewhere in the country, Newcastle International agreed to take diversions in order to help passengers reach their intended destinations.
The continued effort and dedication of the workforce at Newcastle kept the airport open throughout the weekend.
Flights from places such as Cairo, Boston, Tokyo, Montreal and Bangalore were all diverted to Newcastle due to snowy conditions at their original destinations.
Graeme Mason, planning and corporate affairs director at the airport, said: “From Friday to Sunday we took 14 diversions from other airports, including jumbo jets coming from the other side of the world.
“Many of these passengers will be trying to get somewhere else after Newcastle, so we’ve been helping the airlines and tour operators to get people to their final destination as smoothly as possible.
“The feedback we’ve received from airlines, business partners and stakeholders has been fantastic, and underlines what an asset the airport is to the region in times such as these.”
