By using the StreamThru application, North East passengers can now access information about their entire journey from one place, including traffic news, flight alerts, and details of airport facilities. Along with the Airport’s Twitter page and mobile website, passengers now have a wide variety of ways in which to find the information they need whilst on the move.
The new app is part of the airport’s continued focus on customer experience which aims to join up modern technology with customer service operations to enhance passenger engagement.
Graeme Mason, Planning and Corporate Affairs Director at Newcastle Airport, said: “Newcastle Airport is committed to providing its customers with an excellent service and good communication is essential to this. The aviation industry is ever changing and we embrace new ways to reach passengers – smartphone apps are an extremely effective way of doing so.
“Our flight times are available on our mobile website as normal, but the StreamThru app adds even more options – text messages alerting travellers to local travel problems, notices of any delays, and information on the airport facilities. This is all available on the return journey as well, making everything that much easier.
“Digital communications are now incredibly important to our strategy. Our website has as many visitors as our airport itself, and a third of people visiting our website are accessing it from a mobile device. This proves social networking tools, such as StreamThru, work for travellers on the move. Our Twitter presence is growing rapidly and we are looking at social media and how that can provide a two way conversation with our customers and build loyalty.”

Travellers get a consistent experience whenever they travel and use of an application which is helpful not just at the airport, but throughout their entire journey - offering additional content such as destination and events guides, 5-day weather forecasts, an itinerary manager, and a currency converter.

The StreamThru app joins Newcastle Airport’s Twitter feed, www.twitter.com/NCLairport, as another way for passengers to interact with the airport. With over 3000 followers, the airport made good use of Twitter during the bad weather at the end of 2010, and during the eruption of the Grímsvötn volcano in May 2011. In both situations the airport’s followers were given up to date information on the status of the airport, including the efforts of staff to keep the airport operating as normal.
The next stage in the airport’s social media plan is an improved presence on Facebook, allowing even more passengers to communicate directly with the airport.
