Newcastle International Airport team marked the 75th anniversary by travelling 75 miles
The first event took place on Tuesday July 20th when a team of cyclists from the on-site Fire Station took to the road to peddle a mile for each year the Airport has been in operation. A fantastic 40 riders took part. On completion of the ride, there was a formal award presentation to recognise the most outstanding effort.
The route covered the Airport’s seven local council authority areas in an anti-clockwise direction starting at the airport terminal and travel past Westerhope, over the river Tyne, up the Derwent Trail and onto Consett. The route then crossed to Sunderland Marina, and continued along the coast to South Shields, across the River Tyne on the Shields Ferry and then picked up the rivers route past Silverlink, Shiremoor, Dinnington, Prestwick Village before returning to the airport. A support vehicle accompanied the cyclists, giving encouragement as well as being on hand to help those who may suffer mechanical difficulties or injuries.
The second event saw keen walkers Eric Wrightson, General Manager of Landside Operations, and Derek Morgan, Airport Motor Transport Fitter, embark on a 75 mile walk. This followed the same route as the cyclists- but in reverse- on Friday 23rd of July, setting off at 4am from the terminal and arriving back on Saturday 24th July. They walked across the North East to finish back at the Airport an estimated 21 hours later.
